Introducing Prosci's new research-based
Change Management Guide for Managers
|
Managers and supervisors play a key role in driving
successful change in any organization. They are the closest
to the action - where a new process, tool, system or job
role actually comes to life. Until now, however, there were
no tools to truly equip them to be great leaders of change
with their direct reports. Prosci's new Change Management
Guide for Managers provides a holistic process and set of
tools to help managers and supervisors become great leaders
of change. This tutorial will examine
Prosci's Change Management Process for Managers and
Supervisors in more detail. For more background, see the
first module in this series that looked at the
importance and role of managers during change.
Start with the end in mind
Before looking at the process managers can follow to
become great leaders of change, it is important to first
look back into the research from the 2007 Best Practices in
Change Management benchmarking report to see what
specific actions are required of managers and supervisors in
times of change. According to the 426 participants that shared data for
the 2007 report, the five critical roles of managers in
supporting change were:
-
Communicator
-
Advocate
-
Coach
-
Liaison
-
Resistance manager
The process pictured below is designed to help managers
fulfill these roles by first preparing themselves for change
and then leading their people through the change process. |

Prosci’s Change Management Process for Managers and
Supervisors
Context
Notice that surrounding the circle are the elements of Sponsorship
and Communications. These create the foundation that is required to
engage managers and supervisors in the effort of leading their people
through change. Sponsorship is key in demonstrating the organization's
(and senior leadership's) commitment to the change effort. Sponsors must
make a compelling case for change to the entire organization - including
to those managers and supervisors whose employees must change how they
work. Communications provide timely,
accurate and compelling messages about the need for change, the risk of
not changing, the details of what will change and when changes are
expected to occur. Be sure that Sponsorship and Communication
plans follow best practices and are specifically targeted for the managers
throughout the organization.
Below are details of the specific actions a manager completes during
the Change Management Process for Managers. The new
Change Management Guide for
Managers includes step-by-step instructions, checklists, templates
