New Data on Change Management Job Roles
Industry growth driving the addition of permanent positions

 

TUTORIAL WIIFM: One of the top emerging trends in the discipline of change management is the creation of permanent positions and job roles dedicated to change management. Introduction

Over the last decade, the discipline of change management has grown tremendously. As a result of this growth, a major trend in recent years has been the creation of permanent positions or job roles dedicated to change management.

Prosci's 2013 benchmarking study (data collection concluded in May 2013, findings to be released in early 2014) included a section of questions about change management job roles. Below you'll find a sneak peek of several findings from the latest benchmarking study related to change management job roles and positions.

 

Prevalence of change management job roles

Fifty-two percent of the participants in Prosci's 2013 benchmarking study reported that their organization has permanent positions or job roles dedicated to change management. This number, up from 43% of participants in the 2011 benchmarking study, represents a 20% growth in the percentage of organizations creating change management staff positions.

 

 

History of change management job roles

Change management job roles are still fairly new for many organizations. One-fifth of participants have had change management specific job roles for less than one year, with 37% more reporting that job roles had existed for only between one and three years in their organization. Taken together, more than half of the study participants reported having job roles for less than three years.

 

Locations of change management job roles

Of those that have change management job roles, over two-thirds existed in a single location within the organization. Organizations that have had change management job roles for longer, and those that were more mature in change management, tended to have job roles in more locations.

Career paths for change management job roles

Less than one-in-five organizations with change management job roles reported having career paths; however, one-in-four were working toward creating career paths.

 

Conclusion

As the discipline of change management has grown over the last decade, the number of job roles dedicated to change management has grown as well. Over half of Prosci's latest benchmarking study participants reported having change management job roles, most in a single location within the organization. While career paths in change management are not prevalent today, many organizations with change management job roles are moving in this direction.
